Carlos' journey in sustainable agriculture and entrepreneurship
At 23, Carlos is more than just a sustainable tourism technician. He's an entrepreneur, a passionate advocate for sustainable agriculture, and a proud participant in the Colibrí Program. Carlos's journey is a testament to how dedication and a love of learning can transform lives and communities.
Passion for learning and teaching
Carlos describes himself as a highly motivated young man who dreams big and enjoys learning from others. He loves helping people discover and develop their talents, fostering a sense of community and shared growth.
Her introduction to the Colibrí Program began at the RENACER Coffee School, where she discovered the profound impact of Conservation Agriculture on improving the quality of life of farmers and protecting the environment.
During his time at RENACER, Carlos learned crucial techniques in agricultural management, soil restoration, and water conservation. "I fell in love with agriculture and the principles of environmental stewardship through Conservation Agriculture," he reflects.
Deepen knowledge through experience
Carlos's educational journey continued at the Agricultural Summer School, where he expanded his knowledge of sustainable farming practices. One key lesson he learned is the importance of always keeping the soil covered, which helps conserve moisture and nutrients and protects against erosion.
Carlos also participated in leadership courses, equipping himself with the skills necessary to be an effective leader in his community, at university, and in any group he joins. "It's great to see how young people have different ways of thinking, but we're all headed in the same direction: we want a better country and a better environment," he says.
From student to entrepreneur
With a growing passion for agriculture and sustainability, Carlos ventured into the business world. He created his own nursery, where he cultivates ornamental, fruit, and forest plants, and produces organic fertilizers. His interest in plants arose while working in a nursery, where he spent hours reading about horticulture.
“As the days went by, I fell in love with my work and decided to launch my own project,” Carlos explains. He acknowledges that entrepreneurship has its challenges, but his dreams are much bigger than any obstacle he might face.
In the short term, he wants to create economic opportunities for other young people through his plant nursery and teach them how to be entrepreneurs. His long-term vision is to establish a field school, providing more young people with the educational opportunities he benefited from.
The joy of learning by doing
What Carlos appreciates most about the Colibrí Program is its hands-on learning approach. "The best thing is learning by doing, being there, working with my own hands, getting dirty, and learning directly from the field," he says enthusiastically.
Carlos is an inspiring example of how young leaders can leverage education and passion to create positive change in their communities and beyond. His dedication to teaching others and his commitment to sustainable agriculture make him a beacon of hope for a brighter, greener future.
