Denisse's career path in agriculture
In Sonsonate, among the agricultural training classrooms, Denisse stands out not only for her determination but also for her pioneering role in a predominantly male environment. As a student at the Agricultural High School and a recipient of the Colibrí Program scholarship, Denisse is breaking stereotypes and forging her own path in the world of agriculture.
Challenging gender norms
Denisse is the only girl in her class of 11 students at her agricultural high school. But that hasn't discouraged her; instead, it has motivated her to excel. "At first, my family didn't want me to study agriculture because they thought it was a field for men," Denisse recalls. "But I persisted, and when I received the scholarship, they were happy and proud."
Now, with the support of her family, teachers, and classmates, Denisse is thriving. She firmly believes in the importance of equal opportunities for all, regardless of gender.
A deep connection with nature
From a young age, Denisse has felt a deep love for plants and animals. Her concern for the environment and the impact of soil degradation on food security and rural communities drives her efforts to learn and make a difference.
She is acutely aware of how environmental problems affect not only the land, but also the livelihoods of rural families. “Nature is a beautiful thing,” she says. “If you are ever surrounded by it, the experience is wonderful. So just as nature helps us, we should also help it by protecting and respecting it.”
From barista to future engineer
Before receiving her scholarship, Denisse participated in a barista course at the RENACER School of Coffee Farm Managers, completing 50 hours of theoretical and practical training. She learned various coffee preparation methods, adding a unique skill to her agricultural education.
This scholarship not only provides her with financial aid, covering her travel and activity expenses, but also serves as a stepping stone toward her goal of becoming an agricultural engineer. Denisse is committed to studying diligently to maintain her scholarship and earn high grades.
A vision for the future
Denisse's vision is clear: she aspires to become an engineer who can develop and implement tools to protect and improve the environment. Her journey is a testament to the power of perseverance and the importance of supporting young women in all fields, especially those traditionally dominated by men.
Through her story, Denisse hopes to inspire other young women to pursue their dreams, regardless of societal expectations. Her dedication to learning and her passion for nature highlight the profound impact a determined individual can have on the environment and the community.
